Buy Visual Studio 2026 ProfessionalWhat the licence actually is
Before anything else, it’s worth being clear about what a retail perpetual licence key is — because Microsoft sells Visual Studio through multiple routes that work differently, and the confusion is common enough to be worth addressing upfront.
A retail key from Software Supplies is a 25-character alphanumeric code that activates VS 2026 Professional permanently on one Windows PC. It is not a subscription. It does not expire. It does not require you to maintain a Visual Studio subscription account. All monthly feature updates within the VS 2026 release cycle are included at no extra cost — you’re not paying again for v18.5, v18.6, or anything that ships before Visual Studio 2027.
Visual Studio Professional is also sold via Microsoft’s subscription programme (formerly MSDN), which bundles cloud credits and Azure DevOps access. A retail perpetual key is the right choice if you want a clean, owned licence with no ongoing account management. If your team is already invested in the Microsoft subscription ecosystem, that route may suit you better — but for most individual developers and small teams, the retail key is simpler. See the Visual Studio subscription vs perpetual licence comparison for a full breakdown.
Download and install Visual Studio 2026
The installer comes directly from Microsoft. There’s no reason to download it from anywhere else.
- Go to visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads and download the Visual Studio 2026 Professional bootstrapper. The file is small — around 1.5 MB. The actual installation is downloaded during setup.
- Run the bootstrapper as administrator. The Visual Studio Installer will launch and check for updates before presenting the workload selection screen.
- Select your workloads. This is the most important installation decision — see the workload guide below before clicking Install.
- Click Install. A typical developer installation (2–3 workloads) takes 15–30 minutes depending on your connection and storage speed. The full suite with every available workload exceeds 50 GB — don’t install everything.
- Visual Studio will launch automatically when installation completes. You’ll be prompted to sign in or enter a product key. Skip sign-in for now — enter your key first.
Workload selection — what to actually install
The workload screen is where most developers make their first mistake: installing everything to be safe. The result is a 50 GB installation that takes hours and clutters the IDE with tools you’ll never use. Install what you need now; adding workloads later takes two minutes via the Visual Studio Installer.
| Workload | Install if you… |
|---|---|
| ASP.NET and web development | Build web apps, APIs, Blazor, or Razor Pages — includes .NET 10 and C# 14 |
| .NET desktop development | Build WPF, WinForms, or console apps targeting .NET 10 |
| Azure development | Deploy to Azure, use Aspire, or work with Azure Functions |
| Desktop development with C++ | Write native Windows applications or work with C++23 |
| Node.js development | Build JavaScript or TypeScript server-side applications |
| Game development with Unity | Develop Unity games — installs the Unity Hub integration |
Visual Studio 2026 installs completely independently from VS 2022 — both versions run without conflict. If you’re on an active project with a stable build toolchain, keep VS 2022 running while you evaluate 2026 on a parallel branch. Settings, themes, and keybindings carry over automatically on first launch of 2026.
How to activate with your product key
Your key arrives by email within minutes of purchase. The activation process is straightforward — confirmed in Microsoft’s official documentation.
- Open Visual Studio 2026 Professional. If prompted to sign in, you can dismiss this — signing in is not required to activate with a product key.
- Go to File → Account Settings. The Account Settings panel will open on the right side of the IDE.
- Under the Licence section, select “License with a Product Key”.
- Enter your 25-character key in the field provided. The key is formatted as five groups of five characters —
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. - Click Apply. Visual Studio will validate the key online and display a confirmation that the Professional edition is now unlocked.
The Account Settings panel will show “Visual Studio Professional 2026 — Licence: Product Key” once activation is complete. You don’t need to keep signing in or maintain any ongoing account to continue using the IDE — the activation is permanent on that machine.
If something goes wrong
Activation problems with retail keys are rare. The ones that do occur almost always have a straightforward cause.
Key shows as invalid
Check you’re entering it in the right place — File → Account Settings → License with a Product Key, not in any installation dialog or sign-in prompt. Also confirm you installed Visual Studio 2026 Professional specifically; Community edition doesn’t accept product keys. If the key still fails, contact [email protected] — every key is covered by our lifetime warranty.
IDE shows “trial mode” after installation
This is normal. VS 2026 launches in a 30-day trial if no key has been entered. Follow the activation steps above and the trial notice will disappear immediately.
“Your licence has gone stale” message
This occasionally appears on machines that haven’t connected to the internet for an extended period. Go to File → Account Settings and click Refresh while connected. The message clears once the licence token updates. It doesn’t affect the permanent activation status of your key.
Transferring to a new PC
A retail perpetual key is transferable. Uninstall Visual Studio from the old machine, then install fresh on the new one and activate with the same key. Microsoft’s activation servers allow this — it’s the difference between a retail licence and an OEM one. If you encounter any issues during transfer, our support team will resolve it.
Common questions
No. A Microsoft account is optional. Signing in unlocks GitHub Copilot sync and settings roaming, but the IDE itself runs fully without one. Your product key activates the Professional edition independently of any account. If you later sign in, Visual Studio will detect the existing product key activation and leave it in place.
A retail perpetual key activates one PC at a time. If you install Visual Studio on a second machine, you’ll need a second licence. The key is transferable — if you replace your PC, deactivate on the old machine and activate on the new one with the same key. If you need Visual Studio on multiple machines simultaneously, contact us about multi-seat options.
Yes — your VS 2026 Professional licence is permanent. When Microsoft releases Visual Studio 2027 (expected November 2026), VS 2026 continues to function exactly as before. VS 2027 is a separate product that will require a new licence; your 2026 activation is unaffected. A Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) for VS 2026 Professional is also expected in November 2026, providing a stable supported snapshot for teams that want to stay on 2026 long-term.
Not directly — Community and Professional are separate installations. You’ll need to install Visual Studio 2026 Professional from the Microsoft download page, then activate it with your key. You can run both editions side by side if needed, or uninstall Community first. Your projects, settings, and extensions will carry across cleanly to Professional.
No. A retail perpetual key activates the same Professional IDE but without the subscription wrapper. MSDN/Visual Studio subscriptions include cloud credits, Azure DevOps access, and other Microsoft services alongside the IDE — but require ongoing payment to maintain. A retail key is a one-time purchase that activates the IDE permanently. For developers who only need the IDE, the retail key is significantly simpler and cheaper over time.
Instantly — the key is delivered to your email address within minutes of payment being processed. It also saves to your Software Supplies account if you’re signed in at checkout.
