- A Windows PC — Project Professional 2024 is Windows only. There is no Mac version
Project installs alongside Office without conflict. The two products share the same Click-to-Run update mechanism but are entirely separate applications. Do not attempt to add Project through the Office installer — it has its own dedicated setup file downloaded from setup.microsoft.com.

How to confirm activation is complete
Once activation has gone through, the confirmation is unambiguous. Here’s what each state looks like so there’s no guessing.
If you’re seeing the yellow unlicensed banner after signing in, sign out of your Microsoft account within Project (File → Account → Sign Out), close all Project windows completely, reopen, and sign back in. This forces a fresh licence check and resolves the majority of post-activation display issues.
Troubleshooting common activation errors
Activation problems with retail keys are uncommon but not rare. Every error below has a specific cause and a specific fix.
Usually means a subscription licence code is being entered into the retail key flow, or the wrong version of Project is installed. Confirm your key is a retail perpetual product key — it will be a 25-character alphanumeric code in the XXXXX-XXXXX format. Subscription codes look different and are assigned through the Microsoft 365 admin portal, not setup.microsoft.com.
Also confirm you have downloaded Project Professional 2024 specifically from setup.microsoft.com — not Project Standard, and not an older version. If everything looks correct and the error persists, our support team is on hand 9am–6pm, seven days a week at [email protected].
This code usually appears after multiple failed activation attempts in quick succession — Microsoft’s activation servers temporarily block the key to prevent abuse. It does not mean the key is invalid. Wait 30 minutes, then attempt activation again from scratch. The licence is already active on another machine. Project Professional 2024 covers one PC at a time. To move it, sign in to account.microsoft.com, go to Services & Subscriptions, find Microsoft Project, click Manage, and deactivate the old device. Then activate on the new machine by signing into Project with the same Microsoft account.
Trial mode means the key has not yet been redeemed. Project launches in a 30-day trial when no licence is attached to the signed-in account. Go to setup.microsoft.com, sign in, and enter your key. Once the portal confirms redemption, open Project and sign in with the same account — trial mode will clear immediately.
Project needs a brief internet connection to complete the initial licence handshake with Microsoft’s servers. Check your connection is active, temporarily disable any VPN or proxy software, and retry. This error is almost always transient — once the handshake completes, Project works fully offline with no recurring check-ins required.
Transferring your licence to a new PC
Retail perpetual licences are transferable. If you replace your machine, the licence moves with you.
