Visio 2021 vs Visio 2024: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Visio 2021 vs Visio 2024: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Visio 2021 is solid, familiar, and probably still doing everything you need. The question is whether it will keep doing that safely — and what you actually get if you pay for 2024. This article gives a straight answer.

The support deadline is the starting point

Visio 2021 mainstream support ends on 13 October 2026. After that date, Microsoft stops issuing security patches for it. The software keeps working — nothing shuts off — but any vulnerability discovered after that date goes unfixed permanently.

Oct
2026
Visio 2021 end of mainstream support: 13 October 2026.
After this date, no further security updates. Visio 2024 is supported until October 2029 — three additional years of patching.

That three-year gap matters more than it sounds. Visio files increasingly connect to live data sources — Excel, SQL Server, SharePoint. A diagramming tool with access to business data and no security updates is not something you want sitting on a networked machine indefinitely. For most organisations, the support deadline alone is a sufficient reason to upgrade before October 2026.

Whether the feature improvements add anything on top of that is the separate question this article answers.

What actually changed between 2021 and 2024

The honest version: the upgrade is evolutionary. The core diagramming engine, data linking, BPMN 2.0, UML, and CAD import/export are unchanged — those features were already in Visio 2021 Professional. If you use any of them daily, 2024 will feel immediately familiar. What 2024 adds is a layer of polish, some new specialist content, and modest performance improvements.

UI and polish

Visio 2024 aligns with the Office 2024 visual refresh — updated colour palette, Fluent Design transparency effects, and search moved to the title bar. If you run Office 2024 alongside Visio, the two applications now look like they belong together. If you’re on an older Office version, you’ll notice the difference but it won’t get in the way. This is a real improvement to daily comfort, not a reason to upgrade on its own.

New shape and stencil content (Professional)

The additions that matter most in 2024 Professional are specifically for IT infrastructure work: more than ten new Azure stencils, Kubernetes Shapes, and Yourdon-Coad Notation for data flow diagrams. If you map cloud architecture or document containerised infrastructure, these are immediately useful and were genuinely absent from 2021. If your work is process mapping, org charts, or floor plans, none of these additions change your workflow at all.

Performance

2024 renders large, complex diagrams faster. The improvement is real but only noticeable at scale — if your diagrams run to dozens of connected shapes with live data feeds, you’ll feel it. For typical process maps and org charts, there’s no perceptible difference.

What didn’t change

Worth being explicit: data linking, BPMN, UML, and CAD interoperability are core Professional features that existed in 2021 and carry over unchanged to 2024. Anyone who has read inflated comparisons elsewhere suggesting these are new in 2024 — they aren’t. The upgrade case for most users rests on support and the new cloud infrastructure stencils, not on the core diagramming engine.

Who should upgrade, and why

The honest verdict differs by user type. Here it is without padding.

Upgrade now — strong case IT architects and cloud teams The new Azure stencils and Kubernetes Shapes are directly relevant. The support argument stacks on top. Upgrade before October 2026 and do it soon — no reason to wait.
Upgrade before October 2026 Process mappers, analysts, org chart users The feature delta is thin for your workflow, but the support deadline is the same. You’re upgrading for security coverage, not new capabilities. Still the right decision.
Upgrade — and reconsider edition Visio 2021 Standard users Same end-of-support date. This is also the natural moment to evaluate whether you should move to Professional — there’s no upgrade path within a perpetual licence after the fact, and Standard’s limitations have a habit of surfacing at inconvenient moments. See our Standard vs Professional comparison.
Lower urgency — but plan ahead Occasional and low-frequency users The feature case is thin, and the security risk of running unsupported software depends heavily on how Visio fits into your network and data environment. If Visio connects to live business data sources, the risk is real. If it’s used offline for occasional diagrams, you have more flexibility — but October 2026 is still the sensible planning horizon.

What the upgrade costs

Visio 2024 Professional from Software Supplies is £249 — a one-time perpetual licence with instant delivery and lifetime activation on one PC. No annual renewal, no subscription dependency.

Visio Professional 2024 — perpetual licence £249 once
Visio Plan 2 — subscription (3 years at ~£26.90/month) ~£968 over 3 years
Visio Plan 2 — subscription (full 5 years) ~£1,614 over 5 years

The perpetual licence covers the entire remaining support window of Visio 2024 (to October 2029) for a single payment. The subscription model accrues cost indefinitely. For a detailed breakdown of what Plan 2 adds over the perpetual licence — and whether any of those additions justify the ongoing cost — see our Visio 2024 vs Visio Plan 2 comparison.

One practical thing to know before you install

Visio 2024 opens files created in Visio 2021 without any conversion step. Both versions use the .vsdx format, which has been standard since Visio 2013. Microsoft’s own compatibility documentation confirms that Visio 2024 opens drawings from earlier versions — Compatibility Mode applies only when opening legacy .vsd files (the pre-2013 format). Your existing diagrams transfer cleanly.

Installation note: Visio 2024 and Visio 2021 cannot run simultaneously on the same machine without specific version matching. Uninstall Visio 2021 before activating 2024, or confirm your Office version is compatible before attempting a side-by-side setup. Activation is via setup.office.com using a Microsoft account — the same process as Visio 2021.

Common questions

Yes. Both versions use the .vsdx format, which Microsoft has used since Visio 2013. Visio 2024 opens 2021 files directly with no conversion required. Compatibility Mode only activates when opening the legacy .vsd format from Visio 2010 and earlier. You can also save 2024 files in the older format if you need to share diagrams with someone still on a pre-2013 version, though that situation is increasingly rare.
Until 13 October 2026, yes. After that date, Microsoft will no longer issue security patches for Visio 2021 — or for any other product in the 2021 family, including Office 2021 and Project 2021. The software continues to function after support ends, but vulnerabilities discovered after that date will not be fixed.
Visio 2021 continues to work — no licence expiry, no forced shutdown. What you lose is security patching. The practical risk depends on how Visio fits into your environment: a standalone machine used offline carries less exposure than a networked PC where Visio connects to SQL Server or SharePoint. Organisations subject to compliance frameworks such as Cyber Essentials or ISO 27001 should note that running software past its support end date is typically a finding.
Yes. There is no free upgrade path between perpetual versions of Visio. Each version is a separate licence purchase. Visio 2024 Professional from Software Supplies is £249 — a one-time payment covering the lifetime of the 2024 release with no further renewal required.
Not in a standard setup. Microsoft supports running multiple Office versions on the same machine only under specific conditions — primarily when one version is a Microsoft 365 subscription and the other is a perpetual licence, and when version numbers are compatible. Running Visio 2021 and Visio 2024 perpetual licences side by side on the same machine is not a supported configuration. The practical approach is to uninstall 2021 before installing 2024.
The feature delta is thin for basic flowchart work — the 2024 additions are most valuable to IT architects and cloud infrastructure teams. However, the end-of-support date applies regardless of how you use Visio. If you rely on Visio as part of a business workflow on a networked machine, upgrading before October 2026 is the straightforward decision. If Visio is used occasionally on an isolated machine, you have more flexibility, but the support clock is the same.
