Yes. Visio Professional 2024 is a one-time purchase — pay once, keep it indefinitely. No monthly fees, no annual renewal, no surprise price increases. Microsoft doesn’t make the option easy to find, but it exists, and it’s the same full desktop application you’d get with a Visio Plan 2 subscription.

Visio Professional 2024 — the full desktop app, yours to keep. Instant digital delivery with UK-based support.

Buy Visio Professional 2024 — £249

Finding It on Microsoft’s Site

Microsoft’s Visio pricing page leads with two subscription plans: Plan 1 at £3.80 per month (web-only) and Plan 2 at £11.50 per month (desktop and web). Both prices are ex-VAT on an annual commitment.

The perpetual versions appear further down — Visio Standard 2024 at £339.99 and Visio Professional 2024 at £639.99. Same page, less prominent positioning. Microsoft would prefer you subscribe.

That’s a reasonable business decision on their part, but it means people searching for a straightforward one-off purchase often don’t realise the option exists. It does. And you don’t need to pay Microsoft’s retail price to get it — authorised resellers offer the same perpetual licences, activated through Microsoft’s own portal, at significantly lower prices.

What You’re Actually Buying

Visio Professional 2024 is the latest perpetual release, launched in October 2024 alongside Office 2024. It’s a full desktop application — no browser required, no internet connection needed after activation.

Professional is the edition most people want. The key differentiator over Standard is data linking: connecting diagram shapes to live data from Excel, SQL Server, SharePoint, or Access databases. If your diagrams need to reflect real data rather than just sit as static drawings, that feature alone justifies Professional. We’ve covered the differences between Standard and Professional in detail.

Core capabilities include flowcharts, org charts, network diagrams, floor plans, BPMN process maps, UML diagrams, and cross-functional workflows. The template library is extensive and covers most industries without needing third-party stencils.

What It Costs Over Five Years

Visio Plan 2 costs £11.50 per month on an annual commitment (ex-VAT, from Microsoft’s UK pricing page). Over five years, that’s £690 before VAT.

Visio Professional 2024 from us costs £249. One payment. The subscription overtakes the one-off cost after around 22 months — from that point on, every month is pure overspend.

Visio Plan 2 subscription (£11.50/month ex-VAT) vs one-time perpetual licence. Break-even at approximately 22 months.

We’ve written a full feature-by-feature comparison of Visio 2024 and Visio Plan 2 if you want the detailed breakdown beyond cost.

What You Give Up

The perpetual licence doesn’t include everything Plan 2 offers, and it’s worth knowing what you’re trading away.

No web app. You can only use Visio on the PC it’s installed on — no browser access from other devices. If you need to edit diagrams from a laptop and a desktop interchangeably, that’s a real limitation.

No automatic feature updates. Microsoft will release security patches for the perpetual version, but new features, templates, and tools go exclusively to the subscription. The desktop app you buy today is functionally the version you’ll have in five years.

No Visio in Teams. The co-authoring integration that lets multiple people work on a diagram inside Microsoft Teams is exclusive to Plan 2.

If any of those are essential to how you work, Plan 2 is the right choice — don’t fight it. For most people creating diagrams on a single machine, they aren’t.

How to Set It Up

Activation takes about five minutes:

  1. Go to setup.office.com
  2. Sign in with a Microsoft account (or create one — it’s free)
  3. Enter your 25-character product key
  4. Download and install Visio
  5. Open the app — it’s activated and ready to use

Keep your Microsoft account credentials accessible. You’ll need them if you ever reinstall or move the licence to a new machine.

System Requirements

Windows 10 or Windows 11 — that’s the main constraint. There’s no native Mac version of Visio. If you’re on a Mac, Plan 1 or Plan 2 give you the web app in a browser, or you could look at a dedicated diagramming alternative like draw.io or Lucidchart.

Minimum hardware: 1.6 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended), 4 GB free disk space, 1024 × 768 display. Any PC bought in the last decade will handle it comfortably.
