The short answer
Pro for Workstations does not make Windows faster. It raises ceilings and adds support for server-class hardware. Each of its four features has a hardware requirement attached, and that requirement is what decides the question for you.

If you recognised nothing in that right-hand column, that is your answer, and it is the answer for most people who search for this edition. Microsoft is fairly direct about who it is for: its own page names “CAD professionals, Animators, Data scientists, Graphic designers, Media production teams” — the ones running server-grade workstations, not the ones running a good desktop.
What Pro for Workstations actually adds
Everything in Windows 11 Pro is included — BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, the Group Policy Editor, domain join. Pro for Workstations is a superset, not a different product. What follows is the whole of the difference.
Expanded hardware support
This is the headline. Microsoft’s own listing summarises the edition as “Up to 4 CPUs and 6TB of memory”, against two CPU sockets and 2TB for standard Pro. The memory ceilings are documented per edition:

That table disqualifies almost everyone. A very well specified desktop in 2026 might carry 128GB of RAM; standard Pro allows sixteen times that before the edition becomes the limiting factor, and you need a dual-socket board before sockets matter at all. Persistent memory
Support for NVDIMM-N modules, which keep their contents when the power goes off and are read and written at the speed of main memory rather than the speed of a drive. Microsoft says it “helps ensure that the most demanding apps have the performance they need”. Genuinely fast, genuinely specialist — and not a part you will have fitted without knowing it.
SMB Direct
Faster file transfers across a network using adapters with Remote Direct Memory Access. Microsoft’s documentation is specific about what that needs: “Network adapters with RDMA capability. Currently, these adapters are available in three different types: iWARP, Infiniband, or RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet)”. The onboard Ethernet on a desktop motherboard is none of these, and you need RDMA hardware at both ends of the link. Without an RDMA fabric already in place, this feature does nothing for you.
ReFS
The Resilient File System, which Microsoft describes as offering “cloud-grade resiliency for fault-tolerant storage spaces”. This is the one feature with any real pull for people outside the server room, so it gets a section of its own.
If you want ReFS, check what you already have
Two things about ReFS surprise people, and both are worth knowing before £339 changes hands.
The first is that ReFS cannot be your boot drive. Microsoft’s own comparison marks it as not bootable and not supported on removable media. You cannot install Windows onto ReFS. It is for a second volume — a data drive, a backup target, a working set — and nothing else.
The second is that ReFS is a trade, not a straight upgrade. It gains scale — a maximum file and volume size of 35 PB against NTFS’s 256 TB — and integrity checking that can detect and repair corruption on mirrored storage. But it drops things NTFS has: disk quotas, volume shrinking, object IDs, offloaded data transfer, transactions and short names. For a general-purpose drive, NTFS is still right.
If you want ReFS for development work — source trees, build output, package caches — you very probably already have it. Dev Drive is built on ReFS, and Microsoft’s prerequisites state plainly that “Dev Drives are available on all Windows SKU versions.” That includes Home and Pro. You need Windows 11 build 10.0.22621.2338 or later, 50GB of free disk space, 8GB of memory as a minimum with 16GB recommended, and local administrator rights. No edition upgrade, and nothing to pay.
Dev Drive is not the complete ReFS feature set, and Microsoft aims it at development workloads rather than general storage. But it covers the most common reason people go looking at this edition at all, and it costs nothing.
Same operating system, same Pro features, minus four things that need hardware you do not have. Genuine licence, instant digital delivery, and UK-based support if anything needs sorting out.
The four questions that decide it
Run these against the machine in front of you. None is a judgement call — each is a fact about your hardware you either know or can check in Task Manager and Device Manager in a minute.
Pro for Workstations earns its price
- The board has more than two CPU sockets
- You need more than 2TB of RAM
- NVDIMM-N persistent memory is fitted
- You have RDMA network adapters at both ends of a link

A powerful machine is not a workstation in this sense. A high core count, two fast graphics cards, 128GB of RAM and a 10GbE card still land you in the right-hand column. Nothing here makes a single-socket PC render, compile or encode any faster.
The upgrade is a one-way door
Getting there is easy. Microsoft lists Pro to Pro for Workstations as a supported edition upgrade that needs no reboot, by four different methods including simply entering a product key. Mechanically it is the same operation as upgrading Home to Pro: change the key, and the edition changes.
There is no supported route back. Microsoft’s downgrade table marks Pro for Workstations to Pro as not supported, so “I will upgrade and switch back if I do not need it” means a clean install of Windows, with everything that involves. Decide before you enter the key, not after.
One further caveat sits on Microsoft’s listing and catches older machines: “If your system was unable to install Windows 11 when offered the free upgrade due to system requirements, you will not be able to install this version.” If that is your PC, start with the Windows 11 system requirements.
So what should you actually buy?
If any of the four gave you a yes, buy Pro for Workstations. It comes preinstalled on workstation-class machines from the major manufacturers, which is how most people who need it get it, and Microsoft sells it directly for £339 as at September 2026. If all four gave you a no — which is what happens in almost every case — Windows 11 Pro is the edition you want, and you have just saved about £300.
